Mumbra: (Reporter) Maharashtra: Prof. Dr. Jaman Fatima Rizvi of M.S. Law College, (Mumbra) has been conferred with a Doctorate in Research by Amity University. To mark this prestigious achievement, a grand felicitation ceremony was organized by the S.Y. LL.B. class under the guidance of the college Principal, Mr. Hussainali Sir. The felicitation was carried out by Maharashtra’s renowned columnist, political analyst, and senior journalist Dadabhau Abhang, on behalf of the students.

The program witnessed the presence of faculty members including Prof. Meenakshi Dongre, Prof. Pranita Kamble, Prof. Nuzhad Shaikh, and Prof. Maria Dimtimkar, along with students from S.Y. LL.B. and B.L.S.LL.B. The event was anchored in a lively manner by Santosh Jamdhare and Rashida.

Prof. Dr. Rizvi, overwhelmed with emotion after receiving a standing ovation and thunderous applause, expressed heartfelt gratitude towards her colleagues and students. She also highlighted the significance of her research and the reasons for choosing the subject.

Her doctoral thesis was titled: “An Evaluative Study of Matrimonial Cruelty in India with Special Reference to Thane City of Maharashtra.”
The topic—translated in Marathi as “भारतातील वैवाहिक क्रूरतेचा चिकित्सक अभ्यास : महाराष्ट्र राज्यातील ठाणे शहराच्या विशेष संदर्भासहित”—explores the sensitive issue of matrimonial cruelty, addressing dimensions of law, sociology, and women’s studies.

Dr. Rizvi explained that while marriage in India is regarded as a sacred institution, cruelty within matrimonial relationships remains a harsh reality. Matrimonial cruelty can take multiple forms—physical violence, mental harassment, humiliation, suspicion, lack of communication, economic exploitation such as dowry demands, denial of maintenance, as well as sexual harassment or coercion.

Although Indian law, including old IPC Section 498A That is New BNS other provisions, provides remedies against such cruelty, many victims are still unable to access justice. Through her in-depth and sensitive research, Dr. Rizvi studied the growing instances of matrimonial disputes in Thane City—an area undergoing rapid urbanization, lifestyle changes, and socio-economic pressures. Drawing from family court records, women’s grievance cells, and police data, her study examined the causes, patterns, and consequences of matrimonial cruelty.

The felicitation ceremony turned into a moment of inspiration for the students, as the academic community lauded Dr. Rizvi’s tireless efforts, her scholarly contribution, and her guidance-oriented research. Principal Mr. Hussainali Sir, along with all faculty members and students, extended their warm congratulations and best wishes for her future academic endeavors and long life.

On this occasion, Mr. Majarkhan Pathan, admired by students for consistently providing daily academic updates and serving as the Admin of the Gang of M.S. College 2024–2025 WhatsApp group, was also specially felicitated by the professors on behalf of the students.
